The Portland Trail Blazers had a very disappointing 2021-22 NBA season.
Not only did they fail to reach the playoffs altogether, but the front office spent the entire season fending off trading speculation surrounding team star Damian Lillard.
Towards the end of the season, everyone has one big question: how do the Blazers want to develop?
This week, an answer emerged.
According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, the Blazers aren’t after Phoenix Suns big man Deandre Ayton. Prefer to keep Jusuf Nurkic in free agency and let Ayton go to one of the other 4 NBA teams who want him.
Portland, meanwhile, is eyeing two other big names: OG Anunoby of the Toronto Raptors and Lu Dort of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“[The Blazers] prioritized Toronto Raptors swingman OG Anunoby in exchange for the No. 7 in next week’s draft, sources said. But there is increasing talk of Portland potentially targeting a seventh vote to Oklahoma City for No. 12 and a package that could include Lu Dort,” Fischer wrote.
While Anunoby and Dort were solid players, they weren’t game changers. And after ditching CJ McCollum last season, it’s hard to see how a group featuring Lillard and one of them will be better than what the Blazers have with McCollum.
Lillard has made it clear that he is willing to accept the exchange from the Blazers on one condition. On top of that, there are 3 teams circling right now just waiting for their chance to pounce on a deal for him.
Portland needed to put Lillard in a winning situation quickly – or the franchise would lose him forever.

Do the aforementioned moves involving Anunoby and/or Dort really matter?
They are not like that. Not on paper, at least.
How is this whole situation going to rock the Blazers in the end?
Time will answer.
