On September 21, Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports was the first to report that Robert Williams III would require arthroscopic surgery on the same knee where his meniscus was torn. The expected time frame for his return is reported to be four to six weeks, meaning that at worst he will be sidelined for several regular season games.

However, after Williams underwent surgery, it is likely that he will be out for much longer than the timeframe originally set for him. When the Boston Celtics announced that Williams had undergone successful knee surgery, they revealed that Williams would be out for eight to 12 weeks.

Williams’ surgery, combined with Ime Udoka’s season-long suspension, means the Celtics will have to make some adjustments after last season.

Why is Williams having surgery now?

When Williams’ surgery was first reported, many questioned why Williams had surgery so late in the off-season when he could have gotten it sooner, which could have made up for lost time. . Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports explained the timing of Williams’ operation.

“According to sources, Williams chose to keep the pressure on his knee after the Celtics completed their June six-game loss to the Warriors in the NBA Finals, spending July resting. He then started increasing his activity level in August, training in California, and his knee responded well. There is no indication that further surgery will be required.

“Recently the swelling and pain started to return to Williams’ knee, requiring surgery. »

Deveney also clarified that Williams playing in the playoffs had nothing to do with most of his operations, as it would not cause further damage.

“Prior to playing in the playoffs, Williams underwent MRI examinations by three different doctors outside the Celtics orbit, all of whom gave him the green light to play. The possibility of pain still exists, but all doctors conclude that there is no possibility of causing further damage to the knee while playing this game.

“In fact, as the playoffs continued, Williams felt less pain and didn’t need to be hit to drain the fluid. In other words, playing this game does not lead to this operation.

Williams’ playoff debut started in Game 3 against the Brooklyn Nets in the first round and ended in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors, although he missed a few games here and there throughout their playoffs.

The Celtics say Robert Williams will miss Game 4 against the Bucks due to left knee pain.
